Sweet Butter Toast

Hmm…food, travel, books, and just random stuff that I like.

I tried the dry hot pot at Tasty Dining in San Gabriel last night with Louise and Will. I think I like how the Wuhan people do their dry hot pot. The food was good and I didn’t smell like my dinner afterwards, but that might be because we had dinner early and there weren’t that many customers yet. Louise and I shared the lamb pot and Will ordered the vegetarian. I know the lamb was supposed to be the main focus in our pot, but I didn’t much care for it. MY MAIN FOCUS was the non-expensive stuff, the potatoes, celery, cauliflower, tofu and wide vermicelli. They soaked up the flavors well and were delicious. I’ll never look at potatoes and celery the same way ever again. Ok maybe that was a little exaggerated.

Thank you Louise for writing about your dining experience at Hui Tou Xiang and then accompanying me for my first meal there. We ordered a cold dish of marinated squid (小魷魚), pork soup dumplings (小籠包), the Hui Tou pork (回頭豬肉), and a pork and leek pancake (豬肉韭菜盒子). On top of serving good food, the restaurant staff were also very friendly, which is rare in a Chinese restaurant located in the San Gabriel Valley. Is it weird that I didn’t order any noodles? I think so. I’m going to have to go back very soon to try the noodles.

Shanghai No. 1 Seafood Village (上海一號) March 26, 2012

A few months ago my cousin had recommended having dim sum at Shanghai No. 1 Seafood Village. She raved about the decor and that the dishes were fairly decent. I decided to take Nahae there today to give it try. The crowd that was waiting outside was a promising sign. My cousin was not exaggerating about the decor, it was like eating at a restaurant set in the TVB drama “Once Upon a Time in Shanghai”. The dim sum dishes were decent but were on the pricier side and they didn’t have a very large selection. Hopefully they will add more to their menu later. Now I’m curious about their dinner menu, which means I’ll just have to come back again.

There is a reason why I rarely go out for dinner on Monday nights. Monday is my dad’s day off and he usually cooks dinner. He makes us the good stuff.
